Susan Michaels has been calling old-time square dances, family dances, and contra dances for more than 35 years, including her hometown “chicken coop” square dance on Vashon Island, in Washington. Susan specializes in building community, facilitating joy, and just plain having fun. She believes it is her calling in life to teach people how to hold hands in a circle and move to music. She loves all kinds of choreography, but specializes in traditional and contemporary dances with drive and flow, that hold on to the roots of community dance and take off in new directions. Susan brings her special brand of dry, quirky humor with her to every dance event and has a unique gift for making kids, newcomers, two-left-footers, and shy persons blossom through dance.
Breaking up Christmas is a local square dance band known for offering traditional tunes with a delicate balance of gravity and drive. This band includes Dave Thielk on fiddle, Carol Hardy on guitar, Chris Cooper on banjo, and Chris Stuart on upright bass.
The Port Townsend Community Dance is inspired by traditional kitchen and barn dances and features a mixture of traditional sets, always danced to live music along with a dance caller. All experience levels are welcome; all dances are taught! Come alone, with a friend, with a partner, with the family – or with the whole village! Admission is $10 per person/$20 per family; however, no one will be turned away at the door. Please bring your own personal water bottle and consider arriving on foot or by bicycle if possible! Dancing starts promptly at 7:30!
